As a Champion Dad, we’ll go ahead and assume you understand the importance of hitting the gym.
But lately, we’ve become concerned.
See, it appears there are a large number of gentlemen who don’t understand basic gym etiquette.
At Champion Dads, we’ll leave the muscle-building aspect of gym work to the experts.
We believe by just turning up and DOING some exercise, well it’s a great achievement for a busy hardworking dad.
But in an effort to help you not offend normal gym-going folk, here are a few rules all gentlemen should abide by.
1 DO NOT SPEAK ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE
In the locker room – do not speak on your mobile phone. (that’s a cellphone for our American champs).
In the free-weights area – do not speak on your mobile phone.
On the exercise bikes, do not speak o your cellphone.
Get it yet? DO NOT TALK ON YOUR PHONE.
Don’t talk on the phone, particularly if you’re talking business in a way you think makes you sound like a big shot. It really doesn’t.
By all means send text messages.
But if you’re on an exercise bike and you can speak on your phone, then you aren’t really exercising. So why are you even in the gym? Don’t do it.
2 LIMIT THE GRUNTING
At times you’ll be pushing it, but this isn’t the Olympics, keep your noise-making to an absolute minimum. You are not Monica Seles, after all.
3 NO STARING
Seriously, don’t stare at blokes and don’t stare at women.
Nobody is in the gym to show off, we’re here to work. And for many people it’s a vulnerable time. Seriously, hit you’re own exercises and try to leave people to theirs without the creepy sideways glances.
4 DON’T SPIT IN THE SHOWER
When you’re showering please don’t spit. People can her you and it makes us all less happy about being in the shared facilities.
5. DON’T BORE YOUR TRAINER WITH YOUR WORK TALK
Your personal trainer wants you to book more sessions. They’re pretending to find your work “oh-so-fascinating”. The guy working out next to you can see through this ruse? Why can’t you? Also, if you’re personal trainer is a female, she really isn’t interested. And so you know, her boyfriend looks like Hercules.
6. BACK YOURSELF. HAVE CONFIDENCE. DO THE EXERCISES
Gyms can be intimidating, but don’t be. It isn’t a closed club. The only way to improve is to use the equipment. Get advice, by all means, and don’t do anything that might injure you. but get into it. Don’t worry about what people think. Get in there and give it a go.
The business model of gyms is built on people paying fees and not actually using the gym and the classes. Beat them at their own game by turning up and training hard!
